I wonder what would happen
if we took the time to go
back into our childhood
to find the child that didn’t grow.
To take him by the hand,
or bring her out to play
To comfort that child
that never got her way.
To listen to the things
that no one cared to hear
To comfort him or her,
in the moment of great fear.
I wonder what would happen
if we saw the child in others
If we understood that they are not mean,
but perhaps they didn’t have a mother.
What if we connected
with our little selves again?
And paid attention to what they’ve been trying to tell us,
God knows since when.
Perhaps, if we all tried it,
we could get rid of all the shame,
The anger and resentment,
and be whole once again.
"Oh Little Me,
where have you been?"
"I've been here all along,
I've been dying to be seen."
"I'm not sure I can trust you,
but at least, I can try."
"Let's start from the beginning.
It's okay if you want to cry."
I wonder what would happen
if these conversations were real.
If we heard our inner children
with gentle curiosity and heal.
Let's remember to be kind
to ourselves and the people we see
Because when our little selves take over our minds,
we hurt Little You and Little Me.
